D'Urville in the Antarctic. 1863 illustration of the French Antarctic explorer and naval officer Jules Dumont d'Urville's (1790-1842) ship Astrolabe, in Adelie Land during an Antarctic expedition. From 1837-1840 d'Urville sailed to Antarctica and discovered the Adelie coast (named after his wife) and Joinville Island. His observations helped to prove that Antarctica was a large continent.
