A GOOD example of a mediaeval chest, in a style which may be attributed^~*- rather to England than to France or Flanders. There is much inthe design and execution which would lead to the opinion that it is Englishwork: and very possibly it was originally made for some church purpose,to hold vestments, or books, or records. The date is about the middle of the fifteenth century. It is a chestof which the side frame-pieces are prolonged into legs. There is a barornamented with a rich scroll of foliage, below the panels in front. Thesides have the well-known linen pattern, at that time becoming common;and on each door is a mask in relief. The front has also open work, flamboyant tracery in two narrow panels; evidently introduced for thepurpose of ventilating the interior. The chest stands about threefeet high. Bought for 2,1. 4^.
