RMS Lusitania. The Lusitania was a British ocean liner operated by the Cunard Line. Her maiden voyage was between Liverpool, UK, and New York, USA, in September 1907. On the 7th May 1915, during the First World War, the Lusitania was torpedoed by a German U-boat off the south-east coast of Ireland. It sank within 18 minutes, killing 1,198 of the 1,959 people on board, causing outrage in the USA. This photograph dates from between 1907 and 1915, and shows the Lusitania coming into port, possibly in New York. The photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
