The third rail is generally recognized as theideal method of current distribution on straight track, but thedanger of a complicated third-rail system in a switching yard,such as would be required if this method of distribution wasemployed in such places, has made most engineers loath torecommend it. On the other hand, an overhead system has,perhaps, as serious objections. An electric locomotive to ac-complish the work required of a switching engine would need.
