Very often circumscribed disease ofthe nervous system, particularly in regions where nerve centers or tracts areclosely adjacent (medulla oblongata), causes extensive and serious degenera-tion of entire tracts by damaging many of the neurons situated within theregion of the focus. A knowledge of the course of secondary degeneration is important, too,because not infrequently it enables us to determine tlie seat of the secondaryfocus which would otherwise be very difficult.
