View W down the nave (lay brothers' choir) of Strata Florida Cistercian abbey church, Ceredigion, Wales, UK, showing the stone-lined basin in the monks' choir (crossing). Stepped at E & W, the basin is an unusual feature, it may have been used in the mandatum rite when the abbot washed the feet of 12 monks on Maundy Thursday (Holy Week Thursday). Other suggestions include a pre-existing holy well (the basin is on a slightly different alignment to the church) & part of a drainage system. Rebates allowed the flush fitting of a wooden cover or stone slab.
