It consists of an external straight incision down to the bone, starting over the gjeat trochanter, down the outer side of the limb, and a 1422 Amputations circular incision through the skin 5 inches below the constricting band, themuscles being cut by a circular sweep at the level of the retracted skin. Thismethod affords easy access to the joint. The bloodless method of Wyeth, asapplied to the hip-joint and shoulder-joint, is a notable advance in the art ofsurgery. Senns Bloodless Method.—The elder Senn has devised a method for pre-venting hemorrhage during amputations of the hip-joint. He makes a straightincision, about 8 inches in length, in the direction of the long axis of the femurand directly over the center of the great trochanter. This incision reachesabout 3 inches above the upper margin of the great troc
