If our efforts at rectification shouldprove unsuccessful, the forceps may be these cases, it will be observed that the headhas partly or entirely entered the pelvis, butwhere it is entirely above the superior strait, every effort should be made, by pushing up thebody, to permit the head to enter the brim in aflexed condition, and at the same time we shouldendeavour to turn the face backward, and makethe long diameters of the head correspond witheither the oblique or transverse diameter of the Fig. TURNING. 33d superior strait. When we cannot succeed in this, the manualefforts above referred to should be tried, and where these fail, theforceps, the vectis, and the perforator may in their turn becomenecessary. We will now describe the mode of turning in each particularcase. As many of the accidents complicating labour may call forthe operation of turning, it is evident that we may be forced toresort to it in every variety of position which the child may assumein the pelvis : thus, if hemorrhage or convulsion occur in vertex, orface, or breech presentations, version may become necessary; inthe two former cases, complete evolution will be required, whilein the last, the operation will consist simply in bringing down thefeet. In the presentations of every variety, it will be essential to de-termine the position, since upon this will depend the choice of thehand to be employed, as well as the facility with which the ope-ration ma
