In the middle of the guard the Imperial eagle, with its head artistically turned fiercely towards the serpent, opens its wings; and under the eagle is the word "Magenta,''composed of fine brilliants. On the opposite side of the hilt are a figure symbolical of strength, the arms of Autun, and the glorious date (June 4, 1859) of the victory to which the Duke owes his figures are of carved silver, upon a gold ornamentation was intrusted to M.
