When its back-fins stoodabove the water they looked in the distance like a weather was beautiful and the wind moderate, andafter a fair passage, on the 4th of February, we caughtsight of the English coast and Foreland lighthouse, andat night we cast anchor off Margate. Thermometrical Observations were made this day bothin the air and in the sea water. In the air, or in theshade on the south side of the ship the Thermometer ofCelsius at 10 oclock in the morning stood 4I0 above o°[40*1° Fahr.] I had several whole buckets full of waterdrawn up from the sea, and set the Thermometer in themdirectly, when the Mercury shot up like an arrow to 8° Cels.[46*4° Fahr.] where it always remained stationary andwent neither higher nor lower: but when I took it out ofthe water and held it in the open air, it again fell in twoor three minutes to 40 or 30 above o° Cels.
