The MT Phoenix which ran aground at Sheffield Beach, North of Durban on the Kwazulu Natal North Coast, South Africa
The MT Phoenix, a 164 meter derelict bulk tanker, ran aground at Sheffield Beach, North of Durban on the Kwazulu Natal North Coast, South Africa, during rough seas on July 26, 2011. The Phoenix was on the way to a scrap yard in India and was anchored off the Kwazulu Natal coast when the anchor chain broke and it drifted onto the rocks. The crew were taken ashore in a combined effort by the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and the South African Airforce in Durban. The MT Phoenix was successfully refloated on September 3, 2011 and finally scuttled off the Kwazulu Natal South September 6, 2011.
