They are yet bound with the graveclothes of inherited superstition and must be loosed andlet go. On the other hand, there are many strong, spirit-ual leaders in the Chinese Church. In Shanghai there arethree self-supporting Presbyterian Churches. It is theobject of both missions and presbyteries to make all thechurches self-supporting, and this object will be attainedin due time. An organized Chinese Church is a newfactor in evangelization. The minds of the people are more recep-tive than ever before, but the numbers in the Church areinfinitesimally small in comparison with those who are tobe reached with the Gospel. Education Inadequate.—Western education hascrushed the autocratic system of government and usheredin a new order. But neither education nor civilization willever quicken the souls of the Chinese. Swept and gar-nished by outward reforms China will become more devilridden than ever unless the Spirit of Christ enters. Therecan be no true morality without the
