Upon her Majesty's accession he was appointed one of her Equeries; and he acted as Private Secretary to the late Prince Consort from 1849 to his death, in December, 1861, since which date he has served her Majesty in the same capacity. In 1866 he was appointed joint Keeper of her Majesty's Privy Purse. He has frequently attended the Queen in her visits to Balmoral and Grey, it will be remembered, was the editor and compiler, with her Majesty's assistance and direction, of the biographical memoir of the "Early Years of the Prince ; He was also the author of a biography of his own father, entitled "Life and Opinions of Charles, Second Earl Grey [who carried the first Reform Bill]".'
