Ethiopia: Tewodros II (14 January 1818 - 14 April 1868), Emperor of Ethiopia (r. 1855-1868). Portrait, c. 1860. Tewodros/Theodore II (1818–1868), baptized as Sahle Dingil, was the Emperor (Atse) of Ethiopia from 1855 until his death. He was born Kassa Haile Giorgis, but was more regularly referred to as Kassa Hailu. His rule is often placed as the beginning of modern Ethiopia, ending the decentralised Zemene Mesafint (Era of the Princes).
