The man whose pocket is plethoric with money, whether acquired or inherited, who finds his adiposity increasing to an alarming degree, his liver inactive, his mental facul- ties dulled and his zest in life gone and who finds that even sherry and bitters or cocktails (if he is lucky enough in this over-virtuous age to have such things) do not enable him to get up a semblance of an appetite for his three meals per diem, goes to his doctor to find what is the matter with him. If his physician is up to date and does not need to keep him on tap as a meal ticket, he will tell him to buy a high stepping hack (saddle horse), ride for an hour every morning before breakfast, have a cold shower and a good rub down on coming back and report to him in ten days or a fortnight. Our friend may require cushions in his chair for a few days but that will soon wear off. He will find his breeches buttons becoming less and less strained round his waist, his mental faculties clearer and more alert and his appe- tite returning to such an extent that the high cost of living will become a concrete instead of an abstract quantity. No matter what his age he will bid defiance to Father Time and his good doctor will see him no more. So much for the benefit an adult can derive from the animal which was in the near future to become extinct. There is nothing under the sun that makes and shapes a child both mentally and physically and teaches it the way it should go like the possession of a pony. And to it add a dog. Riding teaches a child to think clearly, to act quickly and to keep its temper under control. A pony teaches it a love for animals and whether it be used purely for amusement, as a means of going to and from school or for any other purpose, there is nothing can touch it as a means of building up a sane mi
