Caption: Jodphur, Rajasthan, India - Apr 2003. A tiger pelt hangs on the wall outside the Maharanas suite at Jodphur's Royal Palace, also known as Umaid Bhawan, built during the first half of the 20th century. It is an eclectic blend of architctural styles, cultures and epochs- with Roman Catholic columns and domes, provincial French wings and an overall design resembling the great Cambodian temple Angkor Wat. Although still owned by the Jodphur royal family, Umaid Bhawan was converted into a luxury hotel. The Maharaja and Maharana art deco suites cost 1,200 $. Umaid Bhawan is one of numerous palace hotels in Rajasthan. Princes once renowned for their extravagant pomp and spending, once dethroned and stripped of land, were allowed to keep their palaces. Deprived of the taxes they collected from farmers and villagers, they had to convert their stately homes into tourist ventures to avoid bankruptcy.
