Chemical Warfare Service's research division conducted pyrotechnic research on a shrapnel gas shell containing black powder, stannic-chloride, and chloro-picrin. The photograph captures the shell just two seconds after the explosion. The image was received from the Chemical Warfare Service and taken by J. A. Richter on July 12, 1918.
