Tashlich at Elwood beach, Goleta, California


Throwing bread to the ocean in the Jewish ceremony of Tashlich, to begin the Jewish new year. Tashlich which means to "cast off" in Hebrew, is a Jewish ritual performed on the afternoon of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. The previous year's sins are symbolically "cast off" by throwing pieces of bread, or a similar food item, into a large, natural body of flowing water. This event took place at Ellwood beach in Goleta, where Santa Barbara and Goleta jewish community gathered together. september 2010
