A.—Since the hole through the top of the valveinto the exhaust passage is to provide forthe escape of any steam that may leak bythe balance strips on top of the valve,and thus prevent the leakage from destroy-ing the balance, the diameter of the holeneed be only large enough to allow theleakage to escape.
