Technician in an extrusion unit at a pilot facility producing carbon fibre and new materials. Carbon fibre is composed almost entirely of carbon and is made by the heat treatment of a special type of acrylic thread, rayon or petroleum pitch. It has four times the strength of an equivalent weight of steel and is widely used to reinforce plastics in aircraft, cars and sports equipment. Photographed in France at a facility run by the chemical and materials manufacturer Arkema.
