Even theirown translations into modern languages, by the index of Pius IV., areforbidden books; and it is an unpardonable sin to read them withoutlicense from a bishop or inquisitor. And, as if this were too great aprivilege, in the after edition of Clement IV., it is declared that allpower of granting such license is taken away. But the chief thingto be observed in the above decree, is an absolute prohibition of theexercise of private judgment in reading the scriptures; which is asbad as a prohibition of reading them.
