. New Boston; a chronicle of progress in developing a greater and finer city--under the auspices of the Boston-1915 movement. dinary development and di-versificatiom of social work, since theestablishment of the National Confer-ence of Charitiesand Correction in1874. I am askedto suggest morespecifically some ofthe results which itmight reasonablyexpect to secure forthe charities of Bos-ton. I have beenvery interested inobserving the im-mediate and thelater effects of themeeting of the an-nual sessions of theNational Confer-ence of Charitiesand Correctionupon the variouscities in which ithas met from timeto time. The most evi-dent result is adecided strength-ening of the spiritof good-will andcooperation. Wehave all been talk-ing about cooperation, and most of usmean to cooperate, and Avish to, but, pursuing our own particular ideas, wedrift apart and permit differences ofopinion, method and object to divide likely we even come to doubt theentire good faith of members of the groupwithout justification. The National Con-ference of Charities and Correction bringstogether active workers from all parts of. HOMER FOLKS the country; it also brings together activeworkers from all parts of the city in whichit happens to meet, and it often happensthat these latter are quite as little ac-quainted with one another as the dele-gates from the different cities. The factof coming together to join in arrange-ments for the Na-tional Conference,of sharing in theresponsibility ofmaking the Con-ference a success, draws the localworkers together, and prepares theway for a muchbetter mutual un-derstanding and amore complete mu-tual confidence. Another result isthe general toningup of methods. Weall tend to get intoruts. Most of ustend to see ourparticvdar interestout of proportionin its relation tothe whole. Mostof us forget thatthe particular pieceof work in whichwe are engagedmay be done else-where by quite dif-ferent methods, and perhaps with equalor greater success. x\s we liste
