Herpes simplex virus (HSV), computer model. HSV causes cold sores on the lips or blistering of the genitals. Infection is life-long as the virus becomes dormant until reactivation when the immune system is image was created using molecular modelling software and data from cryo-electron microscopy. Cryo-electron microscopy uses multiple angled beams of electrons to image specimens kept at minus 150 degrees Celsius. The resulting 'slices' of data are reconstructed into 3-D models on computer.
