The desirability of having a more effective brake forstreet cars than that which can be operated by handpower showed itself early in the use of electric cars, andthe greater weight of electric cars and the higher speedat which they are run, makes the question of stoppingthem an entirely different problem than when horse powerwas used as a motive power. The use of air for operat-ing power brakes of this kind naturally suggested itself,owing to the extensive use of this style of brake for steamcars, and to the fact that it had shown itself superior toany other agent in many years of trial on these FIC. 1 —CAR EQUIPPED WITH GENETT DUPLEX AIR BRAKE SYSTEM. started. It was expected that,as the grades are heavy, cable traction would be used,but the directors have decided to adopt electricity. Theresult will be interesting. The Waterloo & City Railwayprospectus has also been issued, but not, I believe, to thepublic, as the stockholders of the London & South West-ern Railway Company, which is to work the new line,were prepared to take up the whole issue. A 3 per cent,guaranteed dividend is to be paid, with a proportion ofany further profits to accrue. All difficulties with the local authority in the way ofadopting electricity on the Coventry tramways seem nowto have been overcome, and it is expected that the workof conversion will shortly be commenced.
