The years is 49 and Julius Caesar looks down at the Rubicon River and contemplating what action he should take.

tiThe Rubicon is a river in northeast Italy. In 49 , Julius Caesar is said to have said "The die is cast!" as he crossed the Rubicon, for with that act he defied Pompey and the other leaders in Rome by crossing into Roman-controlled Italy with his legions and started a Civil War, which would end in 45 with him becoming ruler of the Roman World. With this war, the Roman Republic neared its last days before the establishment of the Roman Empire under Caesar's successor Augustus. This illustration, dating to around 1914, shows Caesar looking down at the Rubicon and contemplating what action he should take.
