Alcoholism. English engraving from the 1750s of the problems caused by addiction to gin, a distilled alcoholic drink. At lower centre a woman drops her baby. A dying man sits with a cup, whilst in the background a dead drinker is being put into a coffin. People are fighting to buy gin from a distillery, whilst other people give their goods to a pawnbroker in return for money to buy more drink. A man has hung himself in a building which has become structurally unsafe because its owners are too drunk to repair it. Image titled \Gin Lane\" drawn by British artist William Hogarth (1697-1764)."
