The large, gracefully droop-ing panicles could hardly be mistaken forthose of the Red-top of the fields, andassuredly not if the spikelets were exam-ined, showing several tiny flowers in eachspikelet where the Red-top has but many places this species is known asFowl Meadow-grass, and the tradition isthat it received that name from the factthat wild ducks and other water-fowlbrought the seed to a low meadow nearDedham, Mass.
