Sri Lanka, satellite image. Low-angle view looking north over the Indian Ocean towards the island of Sri Lanka, with the southern tip of India at upper left. Sri Lanka is 438 kilometres long and 225 kilometres wide at its widest point. The Palk Strait between Sri Lanka and India is 50 to 80 kilometres wide. The archipelago of low-lying coral atolls at lower left is the Maldives. Image data obtained in 2007 by the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument on NASA's Terra satellite, part of the Earth Observing System (EOS).
