The imposing statue of archbishop Absalon standing at south end of Hojbro Plads Copenhagen overlooking Christiansborg Palace

Editorial use only. The statue of Archbishop Absalon dominats the south end of Hojbro Plads in Copenhagen located between the Stroget (main shopping street) to the north and Slotsholmen with Christiansborg to the South. Absalon is assumed to have officially established Copenhagen as a town. Born in 1128 he became bishop in Roskilde in 1158 and eventually established himself as the real ruler of Denmark under Knud VI. He also built a castle on the Slotsholmen island he is now fronting on the plinth and ruins can still be seen in the cellars of the current Christiansborg. Hojbro Plads (Square) is now full of open air cafes and coffee bars and also a lot of bicycles as can be seen
