Soon the work was extended to caring for destitute children. Themortality of these children in the institutions on the Island was admittedto be nearly 100 per cent. The nurses were women committed fordrunkenness and the food of the children was ordinary cows milk. Inthe summer months, very few children survived to the end of the monthof August.
