Arsonval telephone station. 19th-century illustration of the telephone system developed by French physicist Jacques-Arsene d'Arsonval (1851-1940), here being used to communicate between the stock exchanges of Paris and Marseille. The telephone was developed in the 1870s, with several inventors pioneering the technology. This illustration is from 'Physique Populaire' (Emile Desbeaux, 1891).
