A couple sits on the Terrace looking at the large Triton, Mythological half-man half-fish creature above the entrance archway to the palace. The entrance is known as the ‘Allegoric Gate to the Creation of the World.’ The entrance accesses both the original monastery, constructed in the 14th century pre-dating the palace, and the whimsical multi-colored palace completed in 1854 under the rule of King Ferdinand. It is believed that the King was the creator of the design of the Triton, carved from limestone, and he based the character on a story written in 1554 by Damiao de Gois about a triton, Half-man Half-fish, sitting on shell on beach near Sintra. The stone mythological creature is said to illustrate the connection between the marine world below and the terrestrial world above. The palace was purchased by the Portuguese State in 1889 and after the 1910 Republican Revolution the estate was declared a national monument. Under the Portuguese State it became a museum. The palace and landscape overlooking the North Atlantic Ocean was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.
