The grassy park in the foreground is Vauxhall Gardens which is on the site of the famous 18th century Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens. In the 18th century Vauxhall was separated from London by the River Thames and being beyond the London licensing restrictions was notorious for licentious shows and behaviour.
