Liver cancer. Sectioned gross clinical specimen of a primary malignant (cancerous) tumour (red, lower centre) of a liver. This is a cholangiocarcinoma, a tumour of the cells lining the bile duct. It is often associated with viral hepatitis infections. It results in weight loss, pain and jaundice. If it is diagnosed early, and not complicated by cirrhosis, surgery to remove the tumour is possible. In other cases, anticancer drugs may allow the patient to survive longer, but ultimately a transplant is required.
