According to the legend, the stone mason and his crew cound not find a way to establish firmly the foundations of the bridge. In order to make sure the bridge was going to be stable and secure, they had to "sacrifice" the mason's wife and "build" her within the construction. It is a legend quite common in the folk tradition of the Balkan countries.
