In woods. New York and Ontario to Illinois, Missouri, Georgia, Mississippi and Arkansas. Heart-wood soft, yellowish-brown ; sap-wood lighter. Weight per cubic foot 29 lbs. Ascends to • 4200 ft. in Virginia. Yellow or black linn.
