The jottings of some geological, archaeological, botanical, ornithological and zoological rambles around Macclesfield. s of ripple marks, & scales, (Megalicthys Hibberti) have also been pickedup in some old coal works on the western slope of thehill. The third bed of grit on Teggsnose and atLeadbeaters gardens, supply only a small portion ofthe above species, viz., calamites, conifers, lepidodendron, sigillaria and stigmaria. A few goniatites and theavicula pecten are sometimes found in the roof of thesmall seams of grit coal. Dendritic deposits with fucoid-like impressions may also be observed in the Teggsnoseand other quarries. The first, second, fourth and fifthbeds of grit appear to be barren of fossils. The shalesof the Yoredale rocks in Hollin Lane, yield calamitesand obscure traces of other plants, and among the thinblack shales in the upper quarries of the same rocks atRatcliffe Wood, are found calamites and the aviculapecten. Having hitherto confined my observations chiefly toa general description, physical and geological, of thecountry east of the red rock fault, I will now refer to. STONE C ELT.
