FIVES contamination detection system. The Fluorescence Interaction Video Exposure System (FIVES) is designed to detect contamination of environmental workers by using fluorescent dye as a tracer, which can be detected under ultraviolet (UV) light. The worker stands inside a dodecahedral framework that allows him to be illuminated evenly with ultraviolet light (pink bars). A video camera and detector (left) is used to observe the result, which is seen on the screen (lower right). Analysis of the image shows where the tracer dye appears and what improvements are needed to the protective clothing or clean-up methods, to prevent workers being contaminated.
