NPP satellite launch rocket. The NPP (NPOESS Preparatory Project) is an earth observation satellite designed to bridge the gap between the current EOS (Earth Observing System) and the future JPSS (Joint Polar Satellite System) scheduled for 2016. The JPSS resulted from the restructuring of the NPOESS. The NPP carries five instruments. It was launched on 28 October 2011 from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, USA, on this Delta II rocket. Here, the day before the launch, the payload is mounted on top of the rocket inside the faring, and the service structure (at right of the rocket) has just been rolled back.
