Two cross partitions made of wood,which is perforated with holes,burnt by a hot iron, are introducedinto a cask, as at a, b. Over each^jfsl partition is placed a piece ofwoolen cloth, and between themlayers of coarse and fine sand, andof charcoal; c is a pipe from theroof, the water from which passesthrough the filtering materials andmay be drawn off at b. By plac-ing another cistern on a higherlevel, as d, to receive the waterfirst, it will descend through the pipe, e, enter the cask at b,and by the pressure of the water in d will ascend throughthe filtering materials to a, aifd thus be doubly filtered andmore completely purified. By placing a funnel at / watermay be poured into and filtered through the cask, independentof any supply from the roof. When the sand requires clean-ing it must be taken out and washed. FILTER.
