WIMP detector site. Time-exposure image of workers at the UK Dark Matter Collaboration (UKDMC) proj- ect, Boulby Mine, Britain, which looks for Weakly- Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). About 90% of the universe's mass may be made of invisible dark matter such as WIMPs, the rest being made of visible matter such as stars. The UKDMC is the first site to be funded solely to search for WIMPS. Its detectors are 1100 metres underground in Europe's deepest mine so that the overlying rock blocks cosmic rays. WIMPs are to be detected by observing the recoil energies of normal nuclei after a collision with a WIMP, a rare event due to the WIMPs' weak interaction with other matter.
