At that time tho moved by his pleadings,we felt it our duty to tell the truth about his misappropria-tion of funds, for which the law said he should be confinedin the penitentiary. The newspapers of the city treated thematter lightly and the Council whitewashed, and CaptainCunningham held his office in utter defiance of law and theinterests of both himself and the tax payers, and thefair name of the city.
