The following August, the members of the company, toshow their appreciation of his services, presented CaptainBerry a magnificent silver pitcher with gold chain and plateattachment. The first appearance of the Guards in their new uniforms,which have been previously described, was on the occasion ofthe official visit of the Governor and Council to the StatePrison at Thomaston. Warden Hix had invited the Guards tobe his guests on that occasion, and early in the day coacheswere taken for Thomaston. The Guards arrived at their. Mks. G. Herry ROCKLAND CITY GUARDS, 25 destination at about ten oclock and were received by the Stateof Maine Fire Company, a crack fire brigade of a short drill on the part of the Guards near the prison,the members of the company were permitted to inspect thatinstitution. A photograph of the company was also takenduring this visit. The Governor was absent on account of sick-ness, but the Secretary of State and members of the Councilwere present as guests of the warden. Dinner was partaken ofat one oclock, and at a later hour, the Guards paraded on thegreen in front of the prison, under command of Captain Berry,where Hon. Noah Smith, one of the Councillors made a shortspeech in which he complimented the company on its fineappearance.
