Invasive Lake - Pond weed

Invasive Lake - Pond Weed - Fern -Azolla filiculoides is a native of North America and has been introduced into the UK through its use as an aquarium plant. The species which has very few predators is detrimental to indigenous plants, fish and pond life. It produces a thick matt of vegetation blocking out the sunlight and causes overenrichment of nutrients in lakes. Scientists are looking at the introduction of a water weevil to aid control, otherwise the only method of removal is by mechanical means.
