Ribes, in 1818, describes thus the condition of the partswhen Vernet had attained the age of forty-four :— The softparts and loose flaps of the lips, chin, and cheeks have be-come agglutinated at the upper part of the neck, above andto the side of the larynx at the root of the tongue, wherethey form by their adhesion divers folds and opening—the mouth—is situated beneath the arch ofthe palate; the tongue lies concealed in the sof
