Earthquake damage, Japan. Man surveying the ruins of the Negara Gawa railway bridge, Japan, in 1891, following the Great Nobi Earthquake. This powerful earthquake took place on 28 October 1891. Over 7000 people died, more than 17,000 were injured and over 140,000 buildings and other structures destroyed. It was one of the first major disasters to be recorded by photography. Photograph by Japanese photography pioneer Ogawa Kazumasa, published in The Great Earthquake of Japan (2nd edition, 1893) by John Milne and William Kinnimond Burton.
