Redbay Ambrosia Beetle

Female redbay ambrosia beetle, Xyleborus glabratus (about 2 mm long). Redbay ambrosia beetles, native to Asia, are a vector for the fungus Raffaellea lauricola. First discovered in the near Savannah, Georgia in 2002, the beetle and fungus have killed thousands of mature redbay trees (Persea borbonia) from North Carolina to Florida. They also threaten other members of the laurel family including sassafras (Sassafras albidum) and avocado (Persea americana).
