There are no lines innature, and the landscape or figure painteraims to impart to the observer the mentalimpression produced by the object on hisown mind. Working in line, he can onlysuggest that impression and his meaning;but the observers imagination suppliesany lack of interpretation. The engineering draughtsman mustleave nothing to the imagination. He hasto convey exact and positive informationregarding every detail of the machine orstructure he depicts. His drawing, there-fore, is a complete graphical language;but, inasmuch as it does not show theobject as it would appear when con-structed and as the eye would then beholdit, his drawing can only be understood bycue trained in the language. It is, there-fore, a first necessity that all engineers where it will be properly sorted and!cared LOCOMOTIVE WITH LOHMANNIZED STEEL JACKET. NO. 101. ERIE RAILROAD. eign countries the locomotives are cov-ered with sheet iron that is made tolook respectable by frequent paintings;but on the American Continent Russiairon has been almost universally usedand the gases that emanate from theboiler and firebox make that kind ofcovering short lived. We anticipate aprompt remedy for this trouble in thecovering of locomotive boilers withLohmannized steel. The locomotivehere shown is covered with that ma-terial, which has been done as an ex-periment, an experiment which hasbeen so satisfactory as to seeminglysound the knell to all other forms ofboiler covering. Metal subjected tothe Lohmannizing process is renderedimpervious to corrosion from anyknown cause, which makes it particu-larly suitable for boiler covering. Thebright appearance of the Lohmannizedboiler covering is in its favor and is
