Little egret searching for food

The little egret (Egretta garzetta) is a species of small heron. It is a white bird with a slender black beak, long black legs and yellow feet. It feeds in shallow water and on land, consuming a variety of small creatures. When feeding in shallow water, it disturbs the sand in front of it as it walks, hoping to reveal its next meal. Native to southern Europe, the little egret was first seen in the United Kingdom in significant numbers att the end of the 1990s. It is first recorded as breeding in the country in 1996. Its range has gradually expanded north.
