A waitress dressed in the traditional Bavarian dress the famous Nuremberg Bratwurst (Nuremberg sausage) and potato salad served on a metal plate in the shape of a Church bell to customers in a busy Bavarian restaurant in the Handwerkerhof (Craftsmen yard) Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany. From four to twelve sausages are served with either sauerkraut or potato salad served on a Church bell-shaped metal pewter plate in the shape of a Church bell called a Bratwurst bell that first appeared in the early 19th century. It is the trademark of the named restaurant, Bratwurstglocklein, Sausage Bells. There are many legends surrounding the origins of the finger-size Nuremberg sausage. In medieval times, due to its small size, the sausage was passed through a prison door keyhole to feed the inmates in their cells or drilled holes in the cell walls. One such prison is the Lochgefangnisse (Holeprison) in Nuremberg. It is open to the public.
